  197. │ What's wrong with the American worker?  There has been, since comments were│
  198. │ made by the Japanese regarding the American workforce, a lot of conversa-  │
  199. │ tion about the American work force.  I've been a boss and I've been an     │
  200. │ employee and I feel I can objectively answer this question.  The finger is │
  201. │ always pointed at the little guy, not part of management, as being the     │
  202. │ cause of the problems in American business.  That just isn't the truth. The│
  203. │ truth is; if the little guy is not doing a good job it is because manage-  │
  204. │ ment doesn't know how to manage.  To put it another way, there is a story  │
  205. │ about a guy who went out and bought a very, very expensive race horse.  The│
  206. │ horse should have been in the winner's circle more often than in the       │
  207. │ stable.  But he wasn't.  Instead he came in fifth, or sixth all the time   │
  208. │ in a field of six or seven horses.  Finally the owner changed the feed of  │
  209. │ the horse, that didn't help.  Then he changed the groom, that didn't help. │
  210. │ Next he changed the vet that treated the horse, and that didn't help.  Next│
  211. │ time we saw the horse he won, and the time after that he won.  The owner   │
  212. │ was asked: "what change did you make to get this horse to win?"  The owner │
  213. │ replied, "The horse is a champion, trouble was the jockey that was on him  │
  214. │ wasn't."  That is what is wrong with the American work-place.  Truth is    │
  215. │ management doesn't know how to manage.  If something works, and has for a  │
  216. │ number of years, management tries to change it to make it better.  But as  │

  222. │ every manager thinks he needs to boost his/her ego and change things to    │
  223. │ make them better and then blame the little guy when what they 'think' is   │
  224. │ better, bombs.                                                             │
  225. │ The other thing wrong with the American work place is the lack of loyalty. │
  226. │ The company wants your loyalty and they want you to give 150 percent but   │
  227. │ they don't want to return the same in kind.  They would rather drain you   │
  228. │ dry, stress you out and cause you major burn-out, as long as it benefits   │
  229. │ them but they don't want to cooperate with you when things aren't working  │
  230. │ out for you on the job.                                                    │
  231. │ The only way for American business to be competitive is to be supportive   │
  232. │ to their employees at the same time having their employees be supportive   │
  233. │ to them.  It is just like asking for respect from someone but not giving it│
  234. │ in return.  You can't advance in a relationship without it.  So, for those │
  235. │ who are managers out there, take note:  Respect your employees and try     │
  236. │ to understand them, along with cooperating with them and you will gain     │
  237. │ far more than you could ever imagine.  Not just in the work effort but in  │
  238. │ loyalty area as well, not to mention the lower cost of turnover your com-  │
  239. │ pany could experience.                                                     │

  702. │ Story:  A woman, 51 years old, reported her boyfriend to the police when   │
  703. │         he became angry with her and assaulted her.  She told police he    │
  704. │         attacked her with his Bible after she attempted to make him swear  │
  705. │         that he was not seeing another woman.                              │
  706. │HeadLine:  Law Causes Problems For Court                                    │
  707. │ Story:  The courts in Marseilles, were overloaded by law breakers who were │
  708. │         forced to appear before a judge for making too much noise.  When   │
  709. │         the law was passed no one had any idea there would be such a flood │
  710. │         of noise makers hauled into court but the police made so many      │
  711. │         arrests that the court was slowed down for days.  People who honked│
  712. │         horns, ship captains blowing fog horns, even someone yelling was   │
  713. │         arrested.                                                          │
  714. │ HeadLine:  This Isn't Funny                                                │
  715. │ Story:  A man was taken to the hospital for treatment of burns to his pri- │
  716. │         vate parts.  Seems the man's wife found a cockroach and throw it   │
  717. │         into the toilet.  The bug would not drown.  The woman then sprayed │
  718. │         the bug with insecticide to kill it.  Later her husband threw a    │
  719. │         lite cigarette into the john and it caught him on fire.  Paramedics│
  720. │         laughed so hard they dropped the man, breaking his arm and leg.    │

  754. │ dimensional zone looses its power at that time, then they should not       │
  755. │ feel anything coming through the door.  Nor should they experience any     │
  756. │ ill effects."                                                              │

  758. │ "You really think so Thomas?"                                              │
  759. │                                                                            │
  760. │ "Yes, I really think so.  Just one thing, make sure Mrs. Jacobs doesn't    │
  761. │ come through first.  If she does the first thing she'll do is scream at    │
  762. │ the site of her husband's body."                                           │

  766. │ I took off towards the hotel.  I did not hurry.  I knew I was going to     │
  767. │ have to explain some things to Dr.  Bentley and the others.  But wasn't    │
  768. │ certain how or what to say while waiting for Thomas to reach his           │

  773. │ destination.  I feared he would loose energy, as he had before, and be     │
  774. │ forced to stop and rest.  I knew he had extended the time, double what     │
  775. │ it would have taken him, if he had not been injured so badly.              │
  776. │                                                                            │
  777. │ As I reached the front lobby area, the idea came to me that we could       │
  778. │ have signaled each other with a match or candle or something.  It was a    │
  779. │ dark enough area, this would have stood out easily.  I dismissed this      │
  780. │ thought almost immediately.  We could not let the entity, or whatever      │
  781. │ he is, know or even have an inkling of what we were going to do.  By       │
  782. │ giving any indication of our plans, it might reduce our chances of them    │
  783. │ being successful.  It was critical this activity took place without the    │
  784. │ entity having any inkling of our actions.  Theoretically, I suppose, he    │
  785. │ could read thoughts.  His communication with Thomas was in thought         │
  786. │ transference.  I hoped Thomas considered this and would try to take        │
  787. │ appropriate action to hinder the entity from reading his thoughts.  I      │
  788. │ also hoped that the arrogance of the entity, in his concept of his         │
  789. │ strength and power would help.  I figured he would not attempt to read     │
  790. │ Thomas's thoughts, considering his beliefs that he could achieve           │
  791. │ anything he desired.  We, being mere mortals, did not have the power or    │
  792. │ capability to overcome his massive power and strength.                     │

  797. │ I started climbing the stairs.  My thoughts shifted again to Thomas.  I    │
  798. │ mentally tried to send energy impulses to Thomas, much like a person       │
  799. │ capable of telepathy.  I did not know if it would work, or if I had the    │
  800. │ ability to even do this, but it was worth a try.                           │
  801. │                                                                            │
  802. │ I reached the walkway leading down to bungalow 315.  I did not hurry,      │
  803. │ nor did I amble along, I walked normal- ly.  As I reached the opened       │
  804. │ door of the bungalow, I looked inside and inspected the room.  Seeing      │
  805. │ nothing had changed, I moved inside to the hallway.  Once there, I         │
  806. │ stopped before the dimensional door.                                       │
  807. │                                                                            │
  808. │ "Who is it?", Dr. Bentley yelled.                                          │
  809. │                                                                            │
  810. │ "It's Carol, Dr. Bentley.  Are you all okay."                              │
  811. │                                                                            │
  812. │ "We're tolerable, Carol, just tolerable.  What have you and Thomas been    │
  813. │ doing?  Why haven't you gotten us out of here yet?"                        │
  814. │                                                                            │
  815. │ "Dr. Bentley please calm down.  It hasn't exactly been a splendid          │
  816. │ evening for Thomas or I."                                                  │

  829. │ Before I could respond to him, I heard a female voice say, "Funf Unf."     │

  831. │ "Thank you Brenda.  Is it exactly five o'clock?"                           │
  832. │                                                                            │
  833. │ "Do you believe this?," Dr. Bentley imposed himself over Brenda's          │
  834. │ response.  "She's worried about what time it is and we are trapped         │
  835. │ here.  Where the bloody hell is Thomas?  Thomas.  Thomas," he yelled.      │

  837. │ "Dr. Bentley," I screamed back at him until he became silent, "Do shut     │
  838. │ up, Dr. Bentley.  Brenda, exactly?"                                        │

  854. │ I could hear Dr. Bentley raving.  He had been quiet for a short time.      │
  855. │ I suppose being told to shut up came as quite a surprise to a man of       │
  856. │ his position.  He'll get over it, in time.  I am certain I am not the      │
  857. │ first, nor will I be the last to tell him to close his mouth.  He made     │
  858. │ me think of the old joke, 'sure you've done all of this for me, but        │
  859. │ what have you done for me lately.' Sometimes everything is not enough.     │
  860. │ I stood up and walked over to the bungalow door.  I took one step          │
  861. │ outside, I could still hear Dr. Bentley talking.  I looked in the          │
  862. │ direction of the house on the hill.  The lights were still glowing into    │
  863. │ the night, but I could not see well enough to eye Thomas, even if he       │
  864. │ were there.  I had an ear open for Brenda's voice, but all I heard was     │

  871. │ telling Dr. Bentley to cool down and shut up.  "No one wants to listen     │
  872. │ to you rant and rave.  So just knock it off." Ohio common sense            │
  873. │ exploding.  I sort of laughed to myself.  If Dr. Bentley understood        │
  874. │ what was going on, as far as Thomas and I were concerned, he'd probably    │
  875. │ rant and rave some more.                                                   │
  876. │                                                                            │
  877. │ I walked back into the bungalow and back to the hallway.  I leaned         │
  878. │ against the doorway arch between the sitting room and the hallway,         │
  879. │ waiting for Brenda's voice.  I kept going over the things I must do, in    │
  880. │ my mind.  I wanted to be certain not to leave out any critical detail      │
  881. │ that might make anyone suspicious, like Dr. Bentley.                       │
  882. │                                                                            │
  883. │ "Funf sieben," I was brought back from my deliber- ation when I heard      │
  884. │ this.  It was Brenda, telling me in German that it was 5:07.               │

  886. │ "Your watch says seven after five exactly?", I questioned.                 │
  887. │                                                                            │
  888. │ "Ja.", Brenda responded.                                                   │

  905. │ "Now what does this have to do with anything?" Dr.  Bentley said           │

  908. │ "Well Dr. Bentley, Thomas and I had a theory.  The theory is that you,     │
  909. │ all of you, have slipped into a time zone of some sort.  Your watches      │
  910. │ must have been effected because in reality, I am sitting here looking      │
  911. │ out the door and the sun is rising.  So it must act-ually be 6:07 not      │

  919. │ "The significance is, Thomas and I went back to the house on the hill.     │
  920. │ We managed to talk to Anna, remember our talking about Anna, well she      │
  921. │ said that at dawn you would all be able to walk through the dimensional    │
  922. │ door and return to your time and reality.  Well, it is dawn, but           │
  923. │ because you are looking at your watches and are thinking it is an hour     │
  924. │ from dawn, you are stuck there by your own doing.  Now if you realize      │
  925. │ that the time is actually..." I did not need to go any further.            │
  926. │ Suddenly Dr. Bentley, with his wife on his arm, came walking through       │
  927. │ the dimensional door.  Before he had a chance to say anything, I placed    │
  928. │ my hand gently over his mouth, shook my head, no, and pushed him           │
  929. │ towards the sitting room of the bungalow.  I knew as soon as Dr.           │
  930. │ Bentley saw how dark it still was outside he would try to say something    │
  931. │ about it not being dawn yet.  I also knew he would see Mr. Jacobs's        │
  932. │ body on the floor in the sitting room and would probably blurt             │
  933. │ something out.  As I pushed him into the sitting room I whispered to       │
  934. │ him that I would like him to be here for Mrs. Jacobs. He nodded his        │
  935. │ head in the affirmative and remained the body.  As I did this, Mrs.        │
  936. │ Moore came drifting through the door.  Then Mr.  Braden, and slowly        │

  943. │ they remain quite.  Mrs Jacobs was one of the last people to come          │
  944. │ through the door, with Karl, our bus driver, bringing up the rear.         │
  945. │ Mrs. Jacobs saw her husband on the floor of the sitting room almost        │
  946. │ immediately.  She rushed to his body and lifted the jacket we had          │
  947. │ placed over him.  She screamed and began to cry.  Dr. Bentley and Karl     │
  948. │ tried to console her.  She moved past them to me.  She said nothing,       │
  949. │ but raise her hand an slapped my face.  I fell backwards into the wall.    │
  950. │ I understood her anger and her grief but could do nothing about it.        │
  951. │ Dr. Bentley came to my side and help me up and said she did not mean       │
  952. │ it, it was just the shock.  Mrs. Jacobs stood crying not five feet from    │
  953. │ me, I walked over and put my arms around her and she cried into my         │
  954. │ shoulder.  Through her sobs I heard her say 'I'm sorry.' I lead her        │
  955. │ outside with the rest of the group.  When all of them were outside on      │
  956. │ the walkway, Karl and Mr. Braden took Mr. Jacobs body down to the bus.     │
  957. │ I surveyed the bungalow, saw two pieces of luggage sitting near a couch    │
  958. │ in the sitting room, grabbed them.  I had already told Karl and Mr.        │
  959. │ Braden what they should do after taking Mr. Jacobs to the bus.  I          │
  960. │ walked out of the bungalow and slammed the door hard behind me.            │

  1039. │ Team Eeeek had been shaken. Every member, every relationship, every tie.   │
  1040. │                                                                            │
  1041. │ As the "smoke" cleared from the team's "discussion," the sad facts of the  │
  1042. │ situation had become evident. Hymie Krausmeyer had leaked the team's most  │
  1043. │ ambitious software project to a competitor; he had done it inadvertently   │
  1044. │ by shipping it out in an electronic mail packet to all of the subscribers  │
  1045. │ on the Eeeek network, but he HAD done it. Bee was beside herself with      │
  1046. │ rage.                                                                      │
  1047. │                                                                            │
  1048. │ It appeared that the team's master technician had altered the company's    │
  1049. │ files to cover up the blunder. And it also appeared that Eeeek             │
  1050. │ International was on the brink on financial disaster.                      │
  1051. │                                                                            │
  1052. │ To make the entire affair impossible, the usually decisive president of    │
  1053. │ the company had fallen into a funk of depression and was sullenly leaving  │
  1054. │ the problem to the team to handle.                                         │
  1055. │                                                                            │
  1056. │ "I'll murder him," Bee muttered from under the restraining hold of three   │

  1066. │ From Bee's side the quiet Stella brushed a hand across the director's      │
  1067. │ forehead saying, "He didn't mean to hurt the team, Bee. He was trying to   │
  1068. │ help."                                                                     │
  1069. │                                                                            │
  1070. │ "If he wants to help, he should stay out of things he doesn't know         │
  1071. │ anything about," Bee fumed.                                                │
  1072. │                                                                            │
  1073. │ "Possibly," Stella agreed. "Or maybe we should have taught him what he     │
  1074. │ needed to know."                                                           │
  1075. │                                                                            │
  1076. │ Bee looked up at the team's most reasonable member, took in the truth of   │
  1077. │ what she suggested, but refused to give up her anger. "We're not running   │
  1078. │ a home for computer illiterates," Bee said. "Am I supposed to educate      │
  1079. │ every derelict the boss drags in here?"                                    │
  1080. │ Stella dropped her head to the side and peered gently into Bee's eyes.     │

  1087. │ Despite her anger, the truth in Stella's unspoken suggestion rang deep in  │
  1088. │ the director's consciousness.                                              │

  1090. │ For his part, Hymie Krausmeyer was also shaken. He wasn't concerned about  │
  1091. │ the loss of computer software - Can't they see how pointless it all is? -  │
  1092. │ even if he had known how valuable it was to the company. Nor was he        │
  1093. │ overly troubled by Bee's attack on his misshapened little body. What       │
  1094. │ bothered Hymie Krausmeyer was that he hadn't been able to contact his      │
  1095. │ teammates on the higher plane.                                             │
  1096. │                                                                            │
  1097. │ "They should have responded," he told himself. "They should have seen my   │
  1098. │ light and acknowledged the truth of it!"                                   │
  1099. │                                                                            │
  1100. │ Why had he failed? That was what had shaken the Krausmeyer.  Why had       │
  1101. │ Sarina's lessons failed when everything was so simple and obvious?         │
  1102. │                                                                            │
  1103. │ The little man withdrew into his lower vibrations, huddled there and       │
  1104. │ nursed his wounded understanding by searching the worried faces of his     │

  1117. │ From her sunken state of depression, the boss watched the fear come out    │
  1118. │ in her team members; it showed itself in a loss of solidarity. The         │
  1119. │ camaraderie of the past was degenerating into a single-minded dash for     │
  1120. │ personal and financial safety. The team spirit was gone already; it would  │
  1121. │ not be long before the individuals she had so carefully gathered and       │
  1122. │ welded into a unit began withdrawing their support of one another. From    │
  1123. │ there it would be no time at all before they were seeking employment in    │
  1124. │ other - more stable - companies.                                           │
  1125. │                                                                            │
  1126. │ The boss closed her eyes to the disintegration; she hated all of it.       │
  1127. │                                                                            │
  1128. │ "Who died and left you in charge?" Gabriel shouted to the Baron.           │

  1135. │ somebody should take some action."                                         │

  1137. │ In the silence the team members studied their fingers nails, the top of    │
  1138. │ the conference table, the paint on the walls, anything not to have to see  │
  1139. │ the boss in her broken condition.                                          │
  1140. │                                                                            │
  1141. │ Finally, aware of all their eyes that were not on her, the boss mumbled,   │
  1142. │ "I agree with the Baron. Let's open the question to discussion."           │
  1143. │                                                                            │
  1144. │ Using the boss' "support" as grounds for authority, the Baron said, "Very  │
  1145. │ well. It would seem that we are faced with several issues. We will, for    │
  1146. │ instance, have to determine a course of action regarding new products,     │
  1147. │ now that are latest project has been lost to us. And we'll also need to    │
  1148. │ discuss financial cutbacks due to the projected loss of revenues."         │
  1149. │                                                                            │
  1150. │ "Before we get into all that," Crunchie cut in, "I move that we fire       │
  1151. │ those responsible for this mess. I don't want them taking our discussions  │
  1152. │ out of this room!"                                                         │

  1160. │ when we haven't rectified the problem that brought us here?"               │

  1162. │ So there it is, the boss thought, the first shouts of dismemberment. From  │
  1163. │ here there is nowhere to go but down. The idea sickened her all over       │
  1164. │ again but she knew her team was lost.  Rubbing her eyes with her fingers,  │
  1165. │ she tried to block out the sights and the sounds of the anger rising       │
  1166. │ around her. She would have cried but someone might have been watching.     │
  1167. │                                                                            │
  1168. │ "We should at least clear the room while we come to a decision on this     │
  1169. │ matter," Razor suggested. And to Mad Mind she said, "Even you can see the  │
  1170. │ necessity for that!"                                                       │
  1171. │                                                                            │
  1172. │ Taking the team's silence for an affirmative vote, the Baron said in his   │
  1173. │ pompous tone, "Would Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Krausmeyer please leave the     │
  1174. │ room while this matter is under discussion?"                               │

  1176. │ Carp rose immediately to his feet and walked out. Hymie got out of his     │

  1184. │ When they were gone, Crunchie began the assault. "They have to go!         │
  1185. │ (Crunch!) We can't keep anybody around we feels they are more important    │
  1186. │ than the rest of us!"                                                      │
  1187. │                                                                            │
  1188. │ "Let's consider all the facts before we lynch them!" Charity said.         │
  1189. │                                                                            │
  1190. │ But the boss couldn't sit through what she was sure would tear her heart   │
  1191. │ out. She stood up before anybody else could say a word and announced, "I   │
  1192. │ am going to leave this decision to the team since it affects all of you    │
  1193. │ the most. However I would like to call your attention to a few facts       │
  1194. │ before I go."                                                              │

  1196. │ As she toyed with the papers on the table in front of her, the boss felt   │
  1197. │ the team's eyes boring into her. As much as they pretended to protest,     │
  1198. │ they had always looked to her for direction; she knew that. She also knew  │
  1199. │ they were scared and angry and for all their intelligence, they were apt   │
  1200. │ to make decisions based on that fear. But she didn't know what words she   │

  1209. │ mistake. But he made that mistake trying to help Debbie with a company     │
  1210. │ problem.                                                                   │
  1211. │                                                                            │
  1212. │ "It appears that Carp was the first to discover the mistake.  And what     │
  1213. │ did he do?" The boss raised her head and forced herself to face her        │
  1214. │ employees. "He tried to protect his teammate. There was nothing else in    │
  1215. │ it for him. No profit, no promotion, no other gain. Nothing! He just       │
  1216. │ wanted to help."                                                           │

  1218. │ The boss let that idea sink in before she continued.                       │
  1219. │                                                                            │
  1220. │ "And what did Carpenter risk? He put his job on the line.  His paycheck,   │

  1239. │ walked unsteadily from the room.                                           │

  1325. │ The year is 1885.  We find ourselves in San Diego, California.  A wild,    │
  1326. │ rough city back in those days.  Murders, suicides, and death seem to be the│
  1327. │ mainstream of the city.  A battle had already taken place when some of the │
  1328. │ city leaders decided to move the main portion of the city from Old Town to │
  1329. │ New Town San Diego.  Water supplies are not plentiful.  Trains are not in  │
  1330. │ yet, connecting the more northern city of Los Angeles with the far southern│
  1331. │ city of San Diego.  But amidst it all one man has a dream that he is seeing│
  1332. │ become a reality.  The man is E. B. Babcock.  His dream is to build the    │
  1333. │ most luxurious hotel in the west. Mr. Babcock sets out to fulfill his dream│
  1334. │ by purchasing, for $110,000, the island of Coronado and North Island.  He  │
  1335. │ intends to build there.  To raise money to help pay for the building he    │
  1336. │ will end up selling parcels of land to private citizens on the islands.    │
  1337. │ The cost to build this 399 room hotel is over one million dollars.  He has │
  1338. │ no real labor force, as a result, he draws upon the immigrants from China  │
  1339. │ who will work for practically nothing.  He begins his task.  By 1891 the   │
  1340. │ hotel is not only open, as a show place of the west, but visited for the   │
  1341. │ first time by a U.S. president, Benjamin Harrison.  Hotel del Coronado is  │
  1342. │ now a part of the entire country's history, not merely California's.       │
  1343. │ Proudly it sits upon the coast of the clear, beautiful bay of San Diego.   │
  1344. │ A bridge now joining the city to her.  A wonderful place for recreation and│

  1349. │ relaxation.  The Hotel is grand, not merely in structure but also in the   │
  1350. │ manner of treatment of its guests.  It is known for this.  It was also     │
  1351. │ known for being removed from the woes of the city of San Diego.  For back  │
  1352. │ in the 1890s there were many woes.  Murders, suicides, gambling houses,    │
  1353. │ drunken brawls, and more plagued the city.  Hotel del Coronado promised a  │
  1354. │ peaceful time, removed from these afflictions of the city.  So when a young│
  1355. │ woman, aged 24, by the name of Kate Morgan aka Lottie A. Bernard was found │
  1356. │ dead on the steps leading to the beach, it was ruled suicide immediately.  │
  1357. │ Yet does a suicide victim haunt?  If so, why would she?  Well we will be   │
  1358. │ traveling down south to the pearl of pacific hotels to visit and try to    │
  1359. │ discover why she haunts and who is actually haunting.                      │
  1360. │ Rumors, soon after Kate Morgan's death, flew about the hotel among its     │
  1361. │ staff that the room she had stayed in was haunted.  The year is 1892 and   │
  1362. │ no one is willing to come forth and testify to what they experienced.      │
  1363. │ Babcock, though he denied any belief in ghosts, would not rent out the room│
  1364. │ unless the entire hotel was filled.  If the room was not haunted, why then │
  1365. │ did he take this action.  Even after Ms. Morgan had died, the room was not │
  1366. │ rented out for one month.  Of course no records indicate as to why.        │
  1367. │ The story:  Kate Morgan traveled with her husband Thomas under the name of │
  1368. │ Lottie A. Bernard.  Thomas used the name Dr. M.C. Anderson.  Their design  │

  1373. │ was one of deception.  Kate would play Thomas's sister, getting young men  │
  1374. │ interested in her.  When they wished to court her she would tell them they │
  1375. │ had to have her brother's approval, Dr. M.C. Anderson.  In order to secure │
  1376. │ his approval they would soon discover they had to play poker with him,     │
  1377. │ since that was his main past time.  Once the young suitor was fleeced good │
  1378. │ and proper, Lottie (Kate) would drop him and move on to the next young     │
  1379. │ suitor.  Thus Kate and husband Thomas managed to make a decent enough liv- │
  1380. │ ing from this scam.  They used alias' because of their family names, both  │
  1381. │ coming from wealthy families who did not wish to be marked by their con    │
  1382. │ game.                                                                      │
  1383. │ Kate Morgan was a 'natural beauty,' according to the coroner's report and  │
  1384. │ remained beautiful in death as in life.  A small, petite woman of 24 years │
  1385. │ who soon found herself wanting more than roaming the train ways and stage- │
  1386. │ coach paths to earn money.  She told Thomas she wanted a house and a family│
  1387. │ to go with it.  Thomas was not amenable to such a suggestion but finally   │
  1388. │ gave into her desires and bought a house in Los Angeles.  He then would go │
  1389. │ out on the road, looking for high stake poker games, to earn a living.     │
  1390. │ When he found no money in this, Kate would work as a housekeeper in Los    │
  1391. │ Angeles, under another alias, to earn the money necessary for them to live.│
  1392. │ Thomas started traveling more and more and finally Kate joined him back on │

  1397. │ circuit.  But when she discovered she was pregnant she remained behind.    │
  1398. │ Thomas made a tour of the west, from Iowa back to Los Angeles, picking up  │
  1399. │ his wife in route on his way to San Diego.  It on the train ride from L.A. │
  1400. │ to S.D. that he learned of her pregnancy.  They quarreled, he left the     │
  1401. │ train in Orange, CA and Kate went on to stay at the Hotel del Coronado.    │
  1402. │ While she was there, she must have taken a huge amount of quinine, used to │
  1403. │ abort a child back in those days, for she suffered all the symptoms of     │
  1404. │ quinine poisoning.  The large bottle of quinine was found in her room after│
  1405. │ her death.                                                                 │
  1406. │ Reports state that she went into San Diego, across the bay by the Coronado │
  1407. │ Ferry, purchased a .44 caliber pistol and some shells.  She also went to   │
  1408. │ at least one hotel to inquire about the registration of Dr. M.C. Anderson. │
  1409. │ The next morning she was found dead on the steps leading to the beach just │
  1410. │ off the veranda of the Hotel del Coronado.  A small bullet wound to her    │
  1411. │ right temple, no exit wound, blood on her hand and the gun, which lay two  │
  1412. │ steps below her hand.  Did she kill herself?  Is she the one who haunts?   │
  1413. │ If so, why does she do so?  We hope to find some answers in the coming week│
