│ A rather innocent young man wandered into the wrong kind of massage parlor │
│ one day. He was ready to leave immediately but curiosity kept him glued to│
│ the floor, taking in all he could see. Finally the manager approached │
│ him, saying, "Excuse me, sir, are you a member of this club?" │
│ │
│ "Oh, no," said the young man, "I'm just aghast." │

│ The American Worker! │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ What's wrong with the American worker? There has been, since comments were│
│ made by the Japanese regarding the American workforce, a lot of conversa- │
│ tion about the American work force. I've been a boss and I've been an │
│ employee and I feel I can objectively answer this question. The finger is │
│ always pointed at the little guy, not part of management, as being the │
│ cause of the problems in American business. That just isn't the truth. The│
│ truth is; if the little guy is not doing a good job it is because manage- │
│ ment doesn't know how to manage. To put it another way, there is a story │
│ about a guy who went out and bought a very, very expensive race horse. The│
│ horse should have been in the winner's circle more often than in the │
│ stable. But he wasn't. Instead he came in fifth, or sixth all the time │
│ in a field of six or seven horses. Finally the owner changed the feed of │
│ the horse, that didn't help. Then he changed the groom, that didn't help. │
│ Next he changed the vet that treated the horse, and that didn't help. Next│
│ time we saw the horse he won, and the time after that he won. The owner │
│ was asked: "what change did you make to get this horse to win?" The owner │
│ replied, "The horse is a champion, trouble was the jockey that was on him │
│ wasn't." That is what is wrong with the American work-place. Truth is │
│ management doesn't know how to manage. If something works, and has for a │
│ number of years, management tries to change it to make it better. But as │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ The American Worker! │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ one person recently said to me, "Everything works, if you let it." But │
│ every manager thinks he needs to boost his/her ego and change things to │
│ make them better and then blame the little guy when what they 'think' is │
│ better, bombs. │
│ The other thing wrong with the American work place is the lack of loyalty. │
│ The company wants your loyalty and they want you to give 150 percent but │
│ they don't want to return the same in kind. They would rather drain you │
│ dry, stress you out and cause you major burn-out, as long as it benefits │
│ them but they don't want to cooperate with you when things aren't working │
│ out for you on the job. │
│ The only way for American business to be competitive is to be supportive │
│ to their employees at the same time having their employees be supportive │
│ to them. It is just like asking for respect from someone but not giving it│
│ in return. You can't advance in a relationship without it. So, for those │
│ who are managers out there, take note: Respect your employees and try │
│ to understand them, along with cooperating with them and you will gain │
│ far more than you could ever imagine. Not just in the work effort but in │
│ loyalty area as well, not to mention the lower cost of turnover your com- │
│ pany could experience. │
│ Get the egos under control and join the TEAM of workers in your company! │

│ that they would sniff. When a conversation became boring or gossip be- │
│ came boring someone would sniff their herbs to indicate boredom. If some│
│ conversation took place and no sneeze was heard, it meant it was import- │
│ ant and not to be sneezed at. │
│ * You don't know beans: not to know the subject very well. This comes │
│ from a century ago when city folks were duped by the farmer. Farmers │
│ would ask the citified person how many blue beans did it take to make │
│ seven white beans. Most city people couldn't answer and the farmer would│
│ tell them they 'didn't know beans.' Often times not explaining that 7 │
│ blue beans peeled would make 7 white beans. │
│ * To make a scene: today the meaning is applied when someone draws a great│
│ deal of attention to themself as the result of their behavior. But the │
│ phrase actually comes to us from the stage when playwrights were charged │
│ with the duty of creating the illusion of a scene or location just by │
│ the words they used in the play. The reason was simple, stage space is │
│ limited and much must be created by suggestion. │

┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Boardwatch 100 Reader's Choice Bulletin Board Contest │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ NOTE: We held this contest during 1992 and it generated 11,152 votes by │
│ the close of balloting for some 1250 different BBSes. The TOP system │
│ received about 450 votes. Your individual vote can have a tremendous │
│ impact on the outcome of this contest. Further, the odds of winning a │
│ modem in last years contest, were 1 in 1394 (8 modems awarded). │
│ │
│ RULES FOR BBS OPERATORS: Bulletin Board Operators may encourage callers │
│ to vote for their system by offering whatever inducements/encouragements │
│ they like. There is one rule to this contest for BBS operators. YOU MAY │
│ NOT HANDLE ANY VOTE AFTER THE CALLER HAS COMPLETED THE BALLOT. YOU MAY NOT│
│ HANDLE IT IN ANY WAY. │
│ │
│ You may provide callers with anything you like, including postage paid │
│ envelopes, printed matter, solicitations, etc. But once they've completed │
│ a ballot, if you touch, handle, or otherwise deal with the ballot in any │
│ way, your BBS will be disqualified from the contest without appeal or │
│ recourse. │
│ │
│ If you wish to post an electronic ballot on your BBS, you may post this │
│ file IN ITS ENTIRETY. You may post any additional information you feel │

│ is appropriate, but this entire rules file must be available to all │
│ callers. │
│ │
│ Despite the fact that this contest has a minimum of rules, this one rule │
│ does cause problems each year. You cannot post online surveys or doors to │
│ allow voters to vote online. This is vote handling. You cannot accept │
│ ballots & mail or fax them in for callers. The rule of thumb is pretty │
│ clear: You can provide anything you like TO callers to induce them to vote.│
│ There is NOTHING you can accept FROM callers in any way pertaining to this │
│ ballot at all. THEY must complete the ballot & forward it to us themselves.│
│ │
│ We actually received FEDEX packages on the final day of the contest last │
│ year from BBS operators who claimed to have collected a hundred or so │
│ votes. Infractions are dealt with quite economically - the BBS is │
│ summarily disqualified without recourse or appeal. │
│ │
│ One new element introduced in the 1993 contest is date scoring. All │
│ ballots received from 1 January 1993 through 30 June 1993 will receive a │
│ date score based on the date of receipt. Date scores will range from 180 │
│ for votes received 1 January down to 1 for votes received on June 30. │

│ These date stamp values are cummulative for each BBS and will be used to │
│ eliminate ALL ties in the TOP 100. Since ties are quite common in this │
│ contest, it pays to get your votes in early. │
│ │
│ This contest is open to all BBSes worldwide with the sole exception of the │
│ Boardwatch Magazine BBS - which is ineligible. Commercial services such as │
│ Prodigy, America Online, CompuServe, are considered to be networks and not │
│ bulletin boards for the purposes of this contest. HOWEVER, individual │

│ As I reached the front lobby area, the idea came to me that we could │

│ must have been effected because in reality, I am sitting here looking │
│ out the door and the sun is rising. So it must act-ually be 6:07 not │

│ "So? What is the significance of this?" │
│ │
│ "The significance is, Thomas and I went back to the house on the hill. │
│ We managed to talk to Anna, remember our talking about Anna, well she │
│ said that at dawn you would all be able to walk through the dimensional │
│ door and return to your time and reality. Well, it is dawn, but │
│ because you are looking at your watches and are thinking it is an hour │
│ from dawn, you are stuck there by your own doing. Now if you realize │
│ that the time is actually..." I did not need to go any further. │
│ Suddenly Dr. Bentley, with his wife on his arm, came walking through │
│ the dimensional door. Before he had a chance to say anything, I placed │
│ my hand gently over his mouth, shook my head, no, and pushed him │
│ towards the sitting room of the bungalow. I knew as soon as Dr. │
│ Bentley saw how dark it still was outside he would try to say something │
│ about it not being dawn yet. I also knew he would see Mr. Jacobs's │
│ body on the floor in the sitting room and would probably blurt │
│ something out. As I pushed him into the sitting room I whispered to │

│ Mrs. Jacobs saw her husband on the floor of the sitting room almost │
│ immediately. She rushed to his body and lifted the jacket we had │
│ placed over him. She screamed and began to cry. Dr. Bentley and Karl │
│ tried to console her. She moved past them to me. She said nothing, │
│ but raise her hand an slapped my face. I fell backwards into the wall. │
│ I understood her anger and her grief but could do nothing about it. │
│ Dr. Bentley came to my side and help me up and said she did not mean │
│ it, it was just the shock. Mrs. Jacobs stood crying not five feet from │
│ me, I walked over and put my arms around her and she cried into my │
│ shoulder. Through her sobs I heard her say 'I'm sorry.' I lead her │
│ outside with the rest of the group. When all of them were outside on │
│ the walkway, Karl and Mr. Braden took Mr. Jacobs body down to the bus. │
│ I surveyed the bungalow, saw two pieces of luggage sitting near a couch │

│ walked out of the bungalow and slammed the door hard behind me. │

│ Shaken Foundations │
│ │
│ Team Eeeek had been shaken. Every member, every relationship, every tie. │
│ │
│ As the "smoke" cleared from the team's "discussion," the sad facts of the │
│ situation had become evident. Hymie Krausmeyer had leaked the team's most │
│ ambitious software project to a competitor; he had done it inadvertently │
│ by shipping it out in an electronic mail packet to all of the subscribers │
│ on the Eeeek network, but he HAD done it. Bee was beside herself with │
│ rage. │
│ │
│ It appeared that the team's master technician had altered the company's │
│ files to cover up the blunder. And it also appeared that Eeeek │
│ International was on the brink on financial disaster. │
│ │
│ To make the entire affair impossible, the usually decisive president of │
│ the company had fallen into a funk of depression and was sullenly leaving │
│ the problem to the team to handle. │
│ │
│ "I'll murder him," Bee muttered from under the restraining hold of three │

│ anyplace in this galaxy that I won't find him. I WILL murder that little │
│ street urchin!" │
│ │
│ From Bee's side the quiet Stella brushed a hand across the director's │
│ forehead saying, "He didn't mean to hurt the team, Bee. He was trying to │
│ help." │
│ │
│ "If he wants to help, he should stay out of things he doesn't know │
│ anything about," Bee fumed. │
│ │
│ "Possibly," Stella agreed. "Or maybe we should have taught him what he │
│ needed to know." │
│ │
│ Bee looked up at the team's most reasonable member, took in the truth of │
│ what she suggested, but refused to give up her anger. "We're not running │
│ a home for computer illiterates," Bee said. "Am I supposed to educate │
│ every derelict the boss drags in here?" │
│ Stella dropped her head to the side and peered gently into Bee's eyes. │

│ Finally she said, "I'll let you decide." │
│ │
│ Despite her anger, the truth in Stella's unspoken suggestion rang deep in │
│ the director's consciousness. │
│ │
│ For his part, Hymie Krausmeyer was also shaken. He wasn't concerned about │
│ the loss of computer software - Can't they see how pointless it all is? - │
│ even if he had known how valuable it was to the company. Nor was he │
│ overly troubled by Bee's attack on his misshapened little body. What │
│ bothered Hymie Krausmeyer was that he hadn't been able to contact his │
│ teammates on the higher plane. │
│ │
│ "They should have responded," he told himself. "They should have seen my │
│ light and acknowledged the truth of it!" │
│ │
│ Why had he failed? That was what had shaken the Krausmeyer. Why had │
│ Sarina's lessons failed when everything was so simple and obvious? │
│ │

│ │
│ "I believe some decisions are in order," the Baron announced. │
│ │
│ "I agree! (Crunch) Let's clear out the debris and lay some plans for the │
│ near future!" │
│ │
│ From her sunken state of depression, the boss watched the fear come out │
│ in her team members; it showed itself in a loss of solidarity. The │
│ camaraderie of the past was degenerating into a single-minded dash for │
│ personal and financial safety. The team spirit was gone already; it would │
│ not be long before the individuals she had so carefully gathered and │
│ welded into a unit began withdrawing their support of one another. From │
│ there it would be no time at all before they were seeking employment in │
│ other - more stable - companies. │
│ │
│ The boss closed her eyes to the disintegration; she hated all of it. │
│ │
│ "Who died and left you in charge?" Gabriel shouted to the Baron. │

│ │
│ The Baron looked up, then across to the boss, and said, "It would seem │
│ somebody should take some action." │
│ │
│ In the silence the team members studied their fingers nails, the top of │
│ the conference table, the paint on the walls, anything not to have to see │
│ the boss in her broken condition. │
│ │
│ Finally, aware of all their eyes that were not on her, the boss mumbled, │
│ "I agree with the Baron. Let's open the question to discussion." │
│ │
│ Using the boss' "support" as grounds for authority, the Baron said, "Very │
│ well. It would seem that we are faced with several issues. We will, for │
│ instance, have to determine a course of action regarding new products, │
│ now that are latest project has been lost to us. And we'll also need to │

│ │
│ "Before we get into all that," Crunchie cut in, "I move that we fire │

│ "That motion is out of order!" Mad said. │
│ │
│ "It most certainly IS in order!" Bee countered. "How can we move forward │

│ │
│ So there it is, the boss thought, the first shouts of dismemberment. From │
│ here there is nowhere to go but down. The idea sickened her all over │
│ again but she knew her team was lost. Rubbing her eyes with her fingers, │
│ she tried to block out the sights and the sounds of the anger rising │

│ │
│ "We should at least clear the room while we come to a decision on this │

│ │
│ Taking the team's silence for an affirmative vote, the Baron said in his │

│ │
│ "Let's consider all the facts before we lynch them!" Charity said. │

│ │
│ "It appears that Carp was the first to discover the mistake. And what │

│ employees. "He tried to protect his teammate. There was nothing else in │
│ it for him. No profit, no promotion, no other gain. Nothing! He just │
│ wanted to help." │
│ │
│ The boss let that idea sink in before she continued. │
│ │
│ "And what did Carpenter risk? He put his job on the line. His paycheck, │
│ his reputation, even his career, all on the line. For what?" │
│ │
│ The silence between her words was deafening. She had always had the gift │
│ to reach these people. She wondered if she was reaching them now. │

│ │
│ "I wish I had one friend as good as that." │

│ The year is 1885. We find ourselves in San Diego, California. A wild, │
│ rough city back in those days. Murders, suicides, and death seem to be the│
│ mainstream of the city. A battle had already taken place when some of the │
│ city leaders decided to move the main portion of the city from Old Town to │
│ New Town San Diego. Water supplies are not plentiful. Trains are not in │
│ yet, connecting the more northern city of Los Angeles with the far southern│
│ city of San Diego. But amidst it all one man has a dream that he is seeing│
│ become a reality. The man is E. B. Babcock. His dream is to build the │
│ most luxurious hotel in the west. Mr. Babcock sets out to fulfill his dream│
│ by purchasing, for $110,000, the island of Coronado and North Island. He │
│ intends to build there. To raise money to help pay for the building he │
│ will end up selling parcels of land to private citizens on the islands. │
│ The cost to build this 399 room hotel is over one million dollars. He has │
│ no real labor force, as a result, he draws upon the immigrants from China │
│ who will work for practically nothing. He begins his task. By 1891 the │
│ hotel is not only open, as a show place of the west, but visited for the │
│ first time by a U.S. president, Benjamin Harrison. Hotel del Coronado is │
│ now a part of the entire country's history, not merely California's. │
│ Proudly it sits upon the coast of the clear, beautiful bay of San Diego. │
│ A bridge now joining the city to her. A wonderful place for recreation and│

│ relaxation. The Hotel is grand, not merely in structure but also in the │
│ manner of treatment of its guests. It is known for this. It was also │
│ known for being removed from the woes of the city of San Diego. For back │
│ in the 1890s there were many woes. Murders, suicides, gambling houses, │
│ drunken brawls, and more plagued the city. Hotel del Coronado promised a │
│ peaceful time, removed from these afflictions of the city. So when a young│
│ woman, aged 24, by the name of Kate Morgan aka Lottie A. Bernard was found │
│ dead on the steps leading to the beach, it was ruled suicide immediately. │
│ Yet does a suicide victim haunt? If so, why would she? Well we will be │
│ traveling down south to the pearl of pacific hotels to visit and try to │
│ discover why she haunts and who is actually haunting. │
│ Rumors, soon after Kate Morgan's death, flew about the hotel among its │
│ staff that the room she had stayed in was haunted. The year is 1892 and │
│ no one is willing to come forth and testify to what they experienced. │
│ Babcock, though he denied any belief in ghosts, would not rent out the room│
│ unless the entire hotel was filled. If the room was not haunted, why then │
│ did he take this action. Even after Ms. Morgan had died, the room was not │
│ rented out for one month. Of course no records indicate as to why. │
│ The story: Kate Morgan traveled with her husband Thomas under the name of │
│ Lottie A. Bernard. Thomas used the name Dr. M.C. Anderson. Their design │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

│ was one of deception. Kate would play Thomas's sister, getting young men │
│ interested in her. When they wished to court her she would tell them they │
│ had to have her brother's approval, Dr. M.C. Anderson. In order to secure │
│ his approval they would soon discover they had to play poker with him, │
│ since that was his main past time. Once the young suitor was fleeced good │
│ and proper, Lottie (Kate) would drop him and move on to the next young │
│ suitor. Thus Kate and husband Thomas managed to make a decent enough liv- │
│ ing from this scam. They used alias' because of their family names, both │
│ coming from wealthy families who did not wish to be marked by their con │
│ game. │
│ Kate Morgan was a 'natural beauty,' according to the coroner's report and │
│ remained beautiful in death as in life. A small, petite woman of 24 years │
│ who soon found herself wanting more than roaming the train ways and stage- │
│ coach paths to earn money. She told Thomas she wanted a house and a family│
│ to go with it. Thomas was not amenable to such a suggestion but finally │
│ gave into her desires and bought a house in Los Angeles. He then would go │
│ out on the road, looking for high stake poker games, to earn a living. │
│ When he found no money in this, Kate would work as a housekeeper in Los │
│ Angeles, under another alias, to earn the money necessary for them to live.│
│ Thomas started traveling more and more and finally Kate joined him back on │

│ circuit. But when she discovered she was pregnant she remained behind. │
│ Thomas made a tour of the west, from Iowa back to Los Angeles, picking up │
│ his wife in route on his way to San Diego. It on the train ride from L.A. │
│ to S.D. that he learned of her pregnancy. They quarreled, he left the │
│ train in Orange, CA and Kate went on to stay at the Hotel del Coronado. │
│ While she was there, she must have taken a huge amount of quinine, used to │
│ abort a child back in those days, for she suffered all the symptoms of │
│ quinine poisoning. The large bottle of quinine was found in her room after│
│ her death. │
│ Reports state that she went into San Diego, across the bay by the Coronado │
│ Ferry, purchased a .44 caliber pistol and some shells. She also went to │
│ at least one hotel to inquire about the registration of Dr. M.C. Anderson. │
│ The next morning she was found dead on the steps leading to the beach just │
│ off the veranda of the Hotel del Coronado. A small bullet wound to her │
│ right temple, no exit wound, blood on her hand and the gun, which lay two │
│ steps below her hand. Did she kill herself? Is she the one who haunts? │
│ If so, why does she do so? We hope to find some answers in the coming week│
│ and will report them here in Eeeek BITS! for your reading pleasure. We │
│ are certainly looking forward to this investigation and hope to communicate│
│ with Kate Morgan or who ever it is that haunts Hotel del Coronado. │

│ Letter from President Clinton, Vice President Gore Announcing White House │
│ Electronic Mail Access │
│ Part of our commitment to change is to keep the White House in step with │
│ today's changing technology. As we move ahead into the twenty-first │
│ century, we must have a government that can show the way and lead by │
│ example. Today, we are pleased to announce that for the first time in │
│ history, the White House will be connected to you via electronic mail. │
│ Electronic mail will bring the Presidency and this Administration closer │
│ and make it more accessible to the people. │
│ The White House will be connected to the Internet as well as several │
│ on-line commercial vendors, thus making us more accessible and more in │
│ touch with people across this country. We will not be alone in this │
│ venture. Congress is also getting involved, and an exciting announcement │
│ regarding electronic mail is expected to come from the House of │
│ Representatives tomorrow. │
│ Initially, your e-mail message will be read and receipt immediately │
│ acknowledged. A careful count will be taken on the number received as │
│ well as the subject of each message. However, the White House is not yet │
│ capable of sending back a tailored response via electronic mail. We are │
│ hoping this will happen by the end of the year. │

│ This groundbreaking new service will allow citizens to communicate │
│ directly with their Member of Congress by electronic mail. The House of │
│ Representatives has established an electronic gateway to the Internet, │
│ the vast computer network that is used currently by over 12 million │
│ people worldwide. Participating Members of the House have been assigned │
│ public mailboxes which may be accessed by their constituents from their │
│ home computers. In addition, many libraries, schools and other public │
│ institutions now provide, or soon will provide, public access to the │
│ Internet. │
│ │
│ The Members of the House of Representatives who have agreed to │
│ participate in this pilot program are: Rep. Jay Dickey (AR-07), Rep. Sam │
│ Gejdenson (CT-02), Rep. Newt Gingrich (GA-06), Rep. George Miller │
│ (CA-07), Rep. Charlie Rose (NC-07), Rep. Fortney Pete Stark (CA-13), and │
│ Rep. Melvin Watt (NC-12). These Members will be making announcements in │
│ their congressional districts within the next few weeks to make their │
│ constituents aware of the new service. │
│ │
│ The Constituent Electronic Mail System represents a significant effort by │
│ the House of Representatives to expand communication with constituents. │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ With the tremendous growth of electronic mail over the past several │
│ years, and the increasingly inter-connected nature of computer networks, │
│ the new service is a natural addition to the current methods of │
│ communication available to constituents. At the present time, House │
│ Members involved in the pilot program will largely respond to electronic │
│ mail messages from their constituents by postal mail, to ensure │
│ confidentiality. │
│ Constituents of House Members participating in the pilot program who wish │
│ to communicate with those Members will be asked to send a letter or │
│ postcard stating their interest to the Member's office. The request will │
│ include the constituent's Internet "address," as well as that │
│ constituent's name and postal address. This process will allow Members │
│ to identify an electronic mail user as his or her constituent. │
│ The pilot e-mail program will continue until sufficient feedback from │
│ participating offices has been collected to allow improvements and │
│ modifications to the system. When House Information Systems and the │
│ Committee on House Administration are satisfied that the system is │
│ sufficiently error-free, other Members of the House will be allowed to │
│ add this new service as technical, budgetary and staffing concerns allow. │
│ For more information, Internet users are encouraged to contact the House │
│ of Representative's new on-line information service. Please send a │
│ request for information to CONGRESS@HR.HOUSE.GOV (see note). ------ │
